Shoppers in 17 states will get a break on sales tax this year when they buy various school-related supplies such as clothing, computers, shoes and backpacks.

"Take advantage of this," said Rohlena, adding that there are three ways consumers can save during tax-free week. "You get the tax saving. Look for back to school discounts and look for additional coupons to get further savings," she said.

States participating in the August back to school tax-free week, which run on different weeks in different states are: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
