The Blend's Ice Cream version of the Grasshopper features real Creme de Menthe and Creme de Cacao just like the classic bar drink.
Location: Minneapolis
Make no mistake. Daryl Orris' Blend's Liquor Ice Cream isn't for kids.
"These are real cocktails, only in solid form," said Orris, the president and CEO of The Ice Cream Bar, who created the line of 36 flavors. "If you melt it down, it's still an alcoholic cocktail."
All of the ice creams -- from buttered rum to pina colada to whiskey eggnog -- are 20 percent alcohol and 80 percent ice cream. If you have 10 ounces of Blend's Brandy Alexander, for example, you get an ounce of brandy, an ounce of creme de cacao and eight ounces of ice cream.
Orris admitted that Blend's potency creates a set of regulatory issues, with its sale monitored by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, but he said the mix wins over people when they taste it.
After some national distribution deals fell through, Orris said The Ice Cream Bar is looking to expand. "We're looking for financing," he said. "We're ready for the next step."
