DailyBurn
Founded: 2007
Tracks: Fitness, nutrition
Four years ago, Andy Smith and Stephen Blankenship decided to build an app that would make it easier for people to track their workouts and manage their diets.
Their company, which launched in 2007, created software that lets people type in the names of or scan the barcodes on foods they're consuming. Consulting a database of information on more than 500,000 items, the app helps users count calories and monitor their nutritional balance. It also logs workouts and suggests training plans for various goals, such as losing weight or building muscle.
"We were just trying to make it easier to track fitness and diets," co-founder Smith says.
With more than 2 million downloads, DailyBurn is one of four apps under the eponymous company's umbrella. Others include Push-Up Wars, a gaming workout app, and Meal Snap, which allows users to take pictures of their meals and delivers nutritional information about the meal within minutes.
In 2010, the company sold to IAC for an undisclosed sum and has since shifted gears.
"As a company, we're changing," Smith says. The group's new goal is to make its products more social and engaging. Toward that end, DailyBurn has integrated its software with other products like Withings' Wi-Fi scale.
