Near-luxury: Buick Verano
Price: $22,585 - $25,965
Fuel economy: 21 City / 32 HWY

The Verano is a surprisingly excellent small car that's getting, quite deservedly, a lot of attention. It's based on the skeleton of the Chevrolet Cruze but it's a skeleton that was engineered to work well in both cars.

From inside, the Verano feels and drives bigger than it is. It rides smoothly and quietly and handles nicely, too. For those who don't feel the need to have loads of backseat space -- or to just pay more money for the heck of it -- this is a very smart choice.
