Commercials that air during the Super Bowl often push the envelope. But to some of the nation's Freemasons, a longstanding fraternal organization, Mercedes-Benz may have pushed it too far.
The luxury automaker featured an actor portraying Satan who is offering a young man fame and celebrity status in exchange for his soul. On his pinky finger is a Masonic ring.
A petition slamming the company for linking Satan to Freemasonry received nearly 3,000 signatures.
"There are over a million Masons in the United States. Every single one of them is old enough to purchase and drive a car," the petition stated. "None of them is pleased about this."
Mercedes-Benz didn't respond to a request for comment.
