After seeing wages stagnate for almost a year, workers in St. Louis are finally getting a little boost. That's especially true among health care workers.

"After a relatively flat late 2012-early 2013, wages for healthcare jobs caught fire in the third quarter, rising nearly 2% compared with the second quarter," said Bardaro.

BJC HealthCare, which runs 13 hospitals, is the second largest employer in the metro area with nearly 13,000 workers.

In addition, there are some big manufacturers like Boeing's (BA) Defense, Space & Security plant, which employs more than 14,000 local workers.
