Personalized medicine is the future -- and BioBots is helping to shape it.
BioBots' first product is a revolutionary 3D printer for building cells, tissues and organs. The printer uses a chemical that works with visible blue light technology, which doesn't harm the cells.
While bioprinters aren't new, the existing options are expensive and so bulky they need their own room.
But CEO Danny Cabrera, 22, started building the initial prototype with his two co-founders out of a University of Pennsylvania dorm room. So, the printer fits on a desktop. It costs $5,000 -- and for now, the printers are a research tool rather than a doctor's utility.
Cabrera said they're also looking to work with pharmaceutical companies who could use the device, for things like testing cancer drugs.
