In addition to coping with the suddenly thrifty habits of its customers, Target management spent much of last year taking hits from Pershing Square Capital's Bill Ackman. The hedge fund manager has amassed about 8% of the float of Target shares, and he is using it like a cudgel, trying to get the company to offload its credit card business, buy back shares and add him and other hand-picked experts to the board.

With that in the background, Target also needs to rethink its mix of merchandise: While Wal-Mart has been growing its market share during the recession with rock-bottom prices, Target has been struggling mightily. - M.C.
