Despite its size, the world's largest software maker does not always get what it wants. Microsoft was thwarted last year in its efforts to buy Yahoo, but continues to hold out hope of striking a search engine deal with the company.

Known for a somewhat nerdy image, Microsoft scored points with a new advertising campaign that took a swipe at hipper upstart Apple, a series of spots that initially paired Jerry Seinfield and founder Bill Gates and then went on to feature regular people putting a more positive twist on the phrase, "I'm a PC." - S.K.
