The largest life insurer, and the one with the most recognizable mascot (Snoopy), could be a winner in an upcoming round of potential consolidation, given its relatively strong capital position. That said, MetLife, like other life insurers, has seen its share price slump and ability to pay claims deteriorate amid the worsening financial crisis.

To ease some of the problems, New York regulators have moved to give life insurers more flexibility in calculating reserves - a decision that will allow MetLife to reduce the amount it must set aside for guarantees on minimum-return variable annuities by 30%. - S.K.
