The maker of Otis elevators, Carrier air conditioning units and Sikorsky helicopters has been hit hard by the downturn in the building and aerospace industries. UTC, which recently slashed 11,600 jobs, or 5% of its workforce, says it no longer expects an economic recovery this year.

Another black eye was delivered last year when Diebold, the maker of automated teller machines and electronic voting devices, rebuffed its $40-a-share takeover bid.

All of which creates a big headache for UTC's newly appointed CEO, Louis Chênevert, who in April completed a long planned transition by succeeding former CEO George David. - S.K.
