LISA OPRIS, A CASHIER AT WHOLE FOODS IN AUSTIN, CARRIED A DIGITAL CAMERA FOR FIVE DAYS TO SHOW US WHY HER COMPANY RULES. HER SCRAPBOOK.

(FORTUNE Magazine) – KA-CHING! Opris has worked at Whole Foods for just over a year.

HOME BASE Opris works at the flagship store in Austin.

TEAM SPIRIT "I like that we can have fun on the clock. These guys shout specials and play around--they're kind of crazy. A minute ago they were tossing fish, and customers started cheering."

TAKE A DIP Whole Foods encourages employees to invent new ways to display food, then exports winning ideas to other stores. Several stores make mountains out of cheese, but the chocolate fountain and cascading cranberries were Austin inventions. "That's Laura at Candy Island," says Lisa. "Anything you buy they can dip--raspberries, bananas.... The only thing they won't dip is meat."

YEE-HAW! Whole Foods is big on humane animal treatment and is picky about which farms it does business with. "Russell runs our meat section. He has a goat horn he'll play over the intercom and yell, "Yee-haw!"

NEVER A DULL MOMENT "Baggers and cashiers swap duties at least once a week to break up the routine. J.C. and Kelly were working at the express register."

HAVING A BALL "We're not just a grocery store--here's my friend Jaclyn in the apparel section. She and I met at Whole Foods, but now we're also roommates."

BREWMASTERS "Steve and Ted, who guard beer alley, are very well informed. They post their photos next to the beers they like best."
