Six years ago Barmanbek decided that Dogan Holding, Turkey's biggest media conglomerate, should shift its focus to energy. She negotiated a contract to supply electricity to Istanbul, then purchased control of Turkey's freshly privatized petroleum distributor. Dogan's energy sales have since quadrupled and now account for more than two-thirds of its $5.7 billion revenues. As the group's deputy chairman, the 63-year-old Barmanbek is still busy restructuring, most recently selling Dogan's flagship bank to Fortis.
