Dennis Kozlowski, former CEO of Tyco, was sentenced in September 2005 to up to 25 years in state prison for his part in stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from the company. He was also ordered to pay back $134 million in stolen money and was fined $70 million.
Kozlowski dodged conviction in his first trial, which was thrown out after a juror, who was believed to be holding out for acquittal, received a threatening letter and later appeared to flash an “OK” sign to Kozlowski and his lawyers seated at the defense table.
In the second trial, Kozlowski was found guilty on 22 of 23 counts of grand larceny and conspiracy, falsifying business records and violating business law. The disgraced CEO may best be remembered for the lavish and over-the-top birthday party he threw for his wife on Sardinia in the style of a Roman bacchanalia, with toga-wearing models and vodka poured through the ice statue of a nude god.
