Bounced check fees and ATM surcharges have been on "a perpetual rise" and there's little reason to think things will be different in 2007, said Greg McBride of Bankrate.com. Why? "They're low-hanging fruit for banks who want to increase fee income."
Twice a year, Bankrate surveys fees at the five largest banks and the five largest thrifts in the top 25 markets. Its latest report, released at the end of October, found that bounced check fees now average a record high of $27.40, up from $27.04 just six months' earlier.
Meanwhile, ATM surcharges, which you pay when you use an ATM of a bank other than your own, rose to $1.64 from $1.60 in the same time period. And more banks are charging them - a record 98.3 percent as of this fall, according to Bankrate.
