NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - You've filed a tax return every year for as long as you can remember. But that doesn't make April 15th any less daunting.

There are forms to fill out, deductions to claim and dozens of not-so-sensical tax laws to decipher. And there you are with more questions than answers.

Take heart. Free tax help is available by phone, online, and even face-to-face. Consider using one of these sources if you have any questions about your return.

On the Internet Web-savvy taxpayers can find help at the Internal Revenue Service's Web site, IRS.gov. Use the Forms and Publications page to print out the tax information you need or find out about common filing errors on its Resources page. It also has a Refund Status Calculator that lets you check how soon you'll get a refund once you've submitted your return.

H&R Block offers lots of help on its Web site as well. You can take a quiz to decide whether or not you should file online, using paper forms or with the help of a tax planner, or use any features on their Web site of do-it-yourself tools.

Perhaps the biggest online aid for taxpayers, though, is the Internal Revenue Service's new e-file Web site, which will allow up to 60 percent of U.S. taxpayers to file online at no cost.

Eligibility is based on age, adjusted gross income, the ability to file form 1040EZ and claim the Earned Income Credit, state residency, and active military duty status (if eligible). Generally speaking, most people eligible for free e-filing are those who prepare their own taxes and still file paper returns.

Face to face If you have complicated questions about your return, or just want to talk to someone in person about your taxes, consider visiting one of the IRS's Taxpayer Assistance Centers, where counselors can answer your questions about individual or business tax problems.

At an Assistance Center, you can get help with issues such as IRS notices, payment plans or federal tax liens. It's in your best interest to call ahead for an appointment; click here to find your local Taxpayer Assistance Center. From January 15 until tax day, many centers offer extended hours.

You might also consider taking your returns to an IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Center, in which trained volunteers actually prepare income tax returns, free of charge. They work with individuals for whom paid professional assistance might be out of reach, including non-English speakers, people with disabilities, people earning a low income, the elderly and others with special needs.

The IRS and AARP run the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program, in which trained volunteers help people aged 60 or older with returns, particularly those confined to their residences or retirement communities. They provide free tax counseling and basic income tax return preparation to senior citizens. Volunteers will travel to taxpayers' homes, if they cannot come to a TCE site.

Finally, the IRS's Community Outreach Tax Education program offers free tax seminars to groups of people sharing tax interests. IRS employees or volunteers conduct information seminars at convenient times and places in the community.

Should you decide to use any of these services, bring your Social Security card; your current year's tax package and all forms with you, including your W-2s and 1099s. And don't forget documentation for any other sources of income, information for all deductions and credits, and a copy of your taxes from the previous year.

On the phone If you just have a couple of questions or need a form or two mailed to you, getting tax help on the horn might be your best bet.

You can get current or prior year forms, instructions and publications by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM; help with your tax questions is available toll free at 800-829-1040. If you call from a FAX machine, you can use the IRS's TaxFAX service, which lets you request and receive forms and publications by calling (703) 368-9694.  Top of page
