NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -
The Federal Communications Commission Monday proposed a $780,000 fine against AT&T Corp. for violating the commission's "do-not-call" list.
In its first major enforcement action, the agency alleged that AT&T (T: up $0.28 to $18.87, Research, Estimates) is guilty of making telephone solicitation calls to 29 consumers on 78 separate occasions after they had requested to be removed from the company's telemarketing list.
The FCC had initiated an investigation of AT&T's telemarketing practices after a review of consumer complaint data revealed more than 300 complaints. The agency proposed a $10,000 fee for each of the 78 violations it had unearthed.
