February 23, 2004: 5:39 PM EST

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - With a slew of earnings news streaming in this week, investors will be looking to see which companies have been turning a profit and which ones have been generating wider losses.

Novell Inc. (NOVL: Research, Estimates) said late Monday it reversed a year-ago first-quarter loss, earning $10 million, or 3 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $12 million, or 3 cents, from the previous period.

Revenue rose to $267 million from $260 million during the same period.

The news boosted the software maker's shares 1.7 percent higher to $11.40 on INET electronic brokerage from its $11.21 Nasdaq closing price.

Online movie rental company Netflix Inc. said because of higher marketing costs it now expects to post a wider first-quarter net loss of $5.6 million to $8.1 million, versus the $1.2 million to $3.7 million loss it predicted earlier.

Excluding charges, the Los Gatos, Calif. company says it will post a loss of $900,000 to $3.4 million.

Netflix (NFLX: Research, Estimates) shares rose 2.5 percent to $35.90 on INET after closing at $35.02 on the Nasdaq.

Shares of Odyssey Healthcare Inc. fell after the bell as the company predicted its 2004 and first-quarter earnings per share would fall below Wall Street's estimates.
