Rock reality heading to CBS
New Mark Burnett production will feature contestants vying to become next lead singer for INXS.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - What do you get when you combine "American Idol," "Survivor" and "Big Brother?"

Answer: a new series produced by reality TV pioneer Mark Burnett that features musicians vying for the chance to become the next lead singer of Australian rock band INXS, CBS said Thursday.

The untitled show is set to debut on CBS next summer after the Viacom unit won the rights to broadcast the show after outbidding rival networks ABC and NBC, according to media reports.

"Rock stars are colorful personalities and charismatic performers who make great reality TV characters," Burnett said in the statement from CBS.

Would-be rockers will be able to audition in cities throughout the United States and Canada, as well as London, Tokyo and Sydney, Australia.

The field will eventually be narrowed to a dozen male and female contestants that will live together in a Hollywood Hills house as they compete for the INXS spot. The winner will go on a worldwide tour with the band and sing on its next album.

Weekly eliminations will be determined by viewers, remaining band members and judges. The former lead singer of INXS committed suicide in 1997.  Top of page
