NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - California still leads the nation in auto theft, according to a new report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

Of the ten areas in the nation with the highest auto theft rates, seven are in California, according to the report. Two cities -- Detroit and Miami -- are no longer ranked among the top ten.

Reviewing data from the National Crime Information Center for the year 2004, the NICB looked at the number of auto thefts per 100,000 inhabitants for each of 336 metropolitan statistical areas. Metropolitan statistical areas include major cities and surrounding areas.

Overall, auto theft declined by 2.6 percent compared to 2003, according to the report.

"The small reduction in auto thefts is good news for our member companies and the general public," said NICB CEO Robert M. Bryant. "NICB has attacked this problem through expanded efforts with our member companies and law enforcement, and by embarking on an aggressive public awareness campaign to educate and inform consumers of the many ways in which they can help prevent auto theft."

Top ten places for auto theft:

1. Modesto, Calif.

2. Stockton-Lodi, Calif.

3. Las Vegas, Nev.

4. Phoenix-Mesa, Ariz.

5. Sacramento, Calif.

6. Oakland, Calif.

7. VIsalia-Tulare-Porterville, Calif.

8. San Diego, Calif.

9. Fresno, Calif.

10. Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, Wash.  Top of page
