NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -
Porsche announced today at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany that it will build a hybrid version of its Cayenne SUV.
The gas/electric hybrid Cayenne will cut fuel consumption by about 15 percent over the non-hybrid version. It will use a hybrid system being developed in partnership with Volkswagen, the same company Porsche partnered with to create the Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg SUVs.
The Porsche/VW hybrid system will allow the vehicle's gasoline engine and electric motor to operate independently or together as needed.
The Cayenne hybrid should be available by the end of the decade, the company said.
At the same auto show, Audi unveiled its Q7 SUV, based on the same engineering platform as the Cayenne and Touareg. Audi and Volkswagen are corporate siblings. With the new Q7, Audi also unveiled a hybrid Q7 as a concept vehicle.
Hybrid vehicles, like the Toyota Prius, Honda Civic hybrid and Ford Escape hybrid, are powered by a combination of a gasoline engine and an electric motor. Some of the power of the gasoline engine is used to charge batteries for the electric motor.
Audi said that its concept hybrid Q7 was quicker than a gasoline-only version of the same SUV because of the additional boost of the electric motor.
