NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -
Online shopping during this holiday season is up 23 percent from last year and is expected to reach a total of $19 billion, a research firm said Sunday.
Reston, Va.-based comScore Networks said non-travel sales online from Nov. 1 through Dec. 9 were $12.75 billion, up from $10.38 billion in the same period of 2004. Should sales come in as projected, that would represent a 24 percent year-over-year gain.
comScore said consumer searches for iPods are especially intense this year, with a total of 6.6 million from Nov. 1 through Dec. 4. Another popular shopping search is Xbox, with 5 million, followed by Harry Potter, at 4.8 million. (earlier data was corrected by comScore)
"The intense amount of search activity observed to-date demonstrates how popular these items are with consumers," Gian Fulgoni, comScore chairman, said in a statement. "It's also clear that search has become a mainstream way for consumers to research products, irrespective of whether their ultimate purchase will occur online or at a retail store."
