Satellite radio operator inks three-year deal to air 'Oprah and Friends' programming.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - XM Satellite Radio and Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Radio have signed a three-year, $55 million deal to launch a channel featuring the popular talk show host, the companies said Thursday. "Oprah and Friends," which will start broadcasting in September, will feature original programming from Harpo Radio, including a weekly reality radio show with Winfrey and her best friend Gayle King, XM (Research) said in a statement.
Daily programming on the channel will cover topics ranging from nutrition and fitness to self improvement and current events. Several popular "Oprah" personalities, including Bob Greene and Dr. Mehmet Oz will appear on the show. "Oprah Winfrey is a prolific force in our culture whose unprecedented achievements in television, film, publishing and philanthropy will bring an amazing radio experience to the XM nation of subscribers," Hugh Panero, president and CEO of XM Satellite Radio, said in the statement. Winfrey has been caught up recently in a media storm involving author James Frey, who admitted to lying about certain events in his memoir "A Million Little Pieces." Winfrey, who selected the book for her popular book club, initially supported Frey, but later challenged the author on her own show and criticized him for betraying readers. ------------------------- Oprah's looking hot this year.
