Ford hit by another boycott call
Conservative religious group calls for one-year boycott of the No. 2 auto manufacturer, citing firm's support for gay and lesbian groups.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Ford Motor Co. faces a renewed boycott call by a coalition of conservative religious groups for what it says is the auto manufacturer's support of gay marriage. The coalition, led by the American Family Association, includes 19 groups. They called Monday for a one-year boycott of Ford. "Ford could have easily avoided this boycott had they desired to do so by simply remaining neutral in the cultural battles," said the group's statement. "However, Ford rejected the plea of the leaders and publicly announced their continued support of the homosexual groups." The AFA and some of the other groups had announced a boycott against Ford in May 2005, but pulled back on that call in November after an appeal from several Ford dealers. Ford also met with the groups and agreed to pull advertising from publications geared toward the homosexual community, as well as dropping corporate donations for some homosexual organizations, among other steps. But when a coalition of gay and lesbian groups responded with their own attacks on Ford, the company met with them in December 2005 and issued a statement saying it would resume some of the advertising and continue its support for events and non-profit gay and lesbian groups. A Ford spokeswoman Tuesday had limited comment on the new boycott call. "Ford is proud of its tradition of treating all with respect," she said. "We remain focused on what we do best, building and selling the most innovative cars and trucks worldwide." The AFA said it has sent information about its boycott call to all Ford dealers. "Ford has every right to give hundreds of thousands of dollars to groups promoting homosexual marriage. But those who oppose homosexual marriage have every right not to buy automobiles made by Ford Motor Company," the statement from the AFA said. Among the donations that Ford made in 2005 was a pledge of $250,000 to build a Lesbian and Gay Community Center in Ferndale, Mich. ________________ For more news on auto manufacturers, click here. |
