Chrysler recalls 44,000 cars for brake problem
The auto manufacturer's Charger sedans and Magnum wagons may be prone to brake fluid leaks.

DETROIT (Reuters) - Chrysler is recalling more than 44,000 cars, including some of its best-selling 2006 models, to fix a problem that can cause a loss of brake power or an engine fire, U.S. safety regulators said Friday.

DaimlerChrysler AG (Research) said it was recalling some 2006 versions of its 300 and Charger sedans and the Magnum wagon because the hydraulic brake tubes in the cars are prone to rub against a tube in the exhaust system.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that could cause the brake tubes to wear and leak brake fluid.

Versions of the vehicles equipped with 2.7-liter engines are affected by the recall, the company said.

Chrysler said that its dealers would inspect and replace any faulty brake tubes on the recalled cars, which are all built on the same Mercedes-derived platform.

Chrysler dealers will also install a clip to keep the brake lines from contact with the exhaust tube, the company said.

Separately, Chrysler said it was recalling almost 7,000 Jeep Wranglers because of a clutch problem on versions of the 2006 model outfitted with a 6-speed manual transmission. Top of page
