NEW YORK (CNN) - Power has been restored to all Northeast Corridor Amtrak lines, an Amtrak spokesman said. Tens of thousands of travelers were delayed Thursday morning when power outages halted electricity-powered trains along the Northeast Corridor between Washington and New York at the height of the morning rush.
A spokeswoman for New York's Department of Transportation said the outage occurred at 8:04 a.m. Amtrak said the outage affected power from Washington through New York's Penn Station to a point in the Borough of Queens. CNNMoney.com's Chris Morris said his train had been stopped at Metro Park, N.J., since 8:15 a.m. Another CNN employee reported her train had been halted since then in a tunnel about 100 yards from New York's Penn Station. The air conditioning was not working, and emergency lights were on, she said. New Jersey Transit's Midtown Direct service was being rerouted to Hoboken, N.J., where passengers were being transferred to other forms of transportation, said spokesman Dan Stessel. Metro North commuter service was not affected, said spokesman Dan Brucker. "We've got power, we're operating, we're operating on time," he told CNN. The rail line was taking passengers stranded by Amtrak at the three stations that the two lines share: New Rochelle, N.Y., Stamford, Conn., and New Haven, Conn. "We're taking their customers with their tickets, gratis," he said. Service on the Long Island Rail Road was also unaffected. _____________ Looking for more breaking news? Click here |
