Report: Verizon DVR to allow TV flexibility
Recorder will be able to tape shows from any television set in home.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Verizon Communications is rolling out a digital video recorder that enables its TV customers to watch recorded shows on any television set in their homes, according to a published report.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the new DVR system, set to debut Wednesday, is the latest effort by the telephone provider to capture television business of its customers now using cable or satellite services. Meanwhile cable companies are offering phone service to try to win away telecom's traditional core business.

DVR's, which allow easy recording of programs, have become very popular. They allow for customers to start viewing a program after it starts but before it is over, to fast-forward through commercials and to pause even live broadcasts.

But most DVR offerings require a separate machine on any television in the house where the service is wanted, and it can be difficult if not impossible to shift programs between televisions.

The Journal reports that Verizon hopes to further integrate the DVR with content found on the Internet, eventually allowing customers to watch any Internet video on their televisions.

"There will be no more crowding around the PC to look at photos and videos," Shawn Strickland, Verizon's vice president of its TV management segment, told the paper.
