NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- One in seven Americans or a member of their family have had trouble with an insurance claim within the past two years, according to a new survey by Money Magazine and market research firm ICR.
The survey showed that 8 percent said they either had a claim unjustly denied or one that had required several months of effort to resolve.
One in three believe insurance companies treat policyholders unjustly, the survey revealed.
Men feel this way more than women (37 percent to 26 percent), while Southerners are more likely to feel unjustly treated compared to people in the Northeast (36 percent to 22 percent).
Six percent said they received a settlement lower than what they deserved.
People who had experienced difficulty with a claim are twice as likely to believe that insurance companies treat their policyholders unfairly (58 percent to 27 percent).
The Money/ICR poll was conducted by telephone with a nationally representative sample of 1,012 Americans between January 12-16th, 2007. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
