Hot start for stocks

Markets rally at the open on GM earnings, benign economic reports.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- U.S. stocks flexed their muscles at Tuesday's open on the strength on GM's earnings and some benign economic reports.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 86 points, or nearly 0.7 percent. The Nasdaq composite index rallied 0.9 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was 0.6 percent higher.

Among companies making news Tuesday: General Motors (Charts, Fortune 500), Johnson & Johnson (Charts, Fortune 500), GlaxoSmithKline (Charts), Wendy's (Charts), Dow Jones (Charts) and Sun Microsystems (Charts, Fortune 500). Top of page
