Judge denies Wal-Mart's effort to seal documentsGiant retailer may not block public access to court documents in North Carolina tax evasion case: Report.NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- A judge rejected Wal-Mart's motion to block the public from seeing court documents in its dispute with the state of North Carolina over possible tax evasion, according to a report Wednesday. The retailer filed a motion in October to have key future details sealed from public view, according to the Wall Street Journal. The move came just after the Journal published a report on how Wal-Mart (Charts, Fortune 500) paid its outside auditor, Ernst & Young, to find ways to reduce its state tax liabilities, said the piece. In the motion, Wal-Mart had claimed that public view of the documents caused "unreasonable and undue annoyance and oppression of a party that is attempting to litigate a serious dispute with a public agency." The attorney general of North Carolina said there was a public interest in having the documents available. The case challenges how the company used real-estate investment trusts to reduce its tax liability. Wal-Mart has defended the strategy as proper, said the Journal. |
