Well, it's now official: the Mercedes CLS has spawned a whole new type of car: the low-roof four-door coupe. Just as the CLS is based on the more upright E-class, the Volkswagen Passat CC is a low-slung Passat derivative.

An inch wider and longer, but two inches shorter than a regular Passat, the CC, which made its debut at the 2008 Detroit auto show, is a much sleeker and sexier sedan.

Only two people can sit in the rear seat of the CC, but once inside, there's more headroom than you'd imagine. The CC will display a host of luxury features including heated and cooled seats, a rearview camera, adaptive suspension, and a lane- departure prevention system.

VW insiders hint that the U.S. market CC (the Passat name will be dropped) will start at around $27,000. That strikes us a fantastic deal, because the CC looks like it costs forty grand.
