Dodge Challenger ready to rumble

Chrysler's new performance ride is a blast from the muscle car past.

Chrysler engineers looked to the 1970 Dodge Challenger for inspiration in designing its 2008 descendant. Even the new version's side-view mirrors were based on a mold taken from the mirror of a 1970 car.

"Our designers wanted to capture the mind's-eye view of what people today remember about the Challenger from 35 years ago," said Trevor Creed, head of design at Chrysler.

For the 2008 model year, the Challenger will be available in only three colors: HEMI Orange, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat and Bright Silver Metallic.

The racing stripe going up the center of the car's raised hood is covered in faux-carbon fiber and ends in a pair of hood scoops. The black rear spoiler isn't just for show, Chrysler says. It provides significant downforce during high-speed driving.
