Small car: Honda Civic Hybrid
Price: $23,800
Mileage: 45 mpg Hwy, 40 mpg City
Annual fuel cost: $921

Even though it's listed as a "small car" by the EPA and not a "family car," like the Prius, the Civic is actually pretty generous in terms of passenger space. But the Civic has about five cubic feet less luggage space than the Prius.

The two cars are also very close in price, with a stripped-down Prius actually costing less than the Civic Hybrid.

The Civic has a less attention-grabbing design, a fact that's a plus for buyers who are mainly looking to save on gas -- not make a statement.

NEXT: Luxury car: Lexus HS 250h
