A sagebrush suburb of Phoenix, Glendale is famous as the home of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals, the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes and for the spring training facilities of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox.
The dry, mild winters have attracted retirees for decades, although summer temperatures can be fierce. But relief is just a short drive away in the nearby mountains and national forest.
Also attracting pensioners is reasonable housing. Home prices have been driven down by a spate of foreclosures.
