Amount donated: $6.5 million
When trying to raise funds for previous disasters like Hurricane Katrina, this investment bank learned an effective tactic: Tell clients you'll donate proceeds from a day's commission fees to the emergency. So after the earthquake struck Haiti, Jefferies was able to act quickly.
Just three days later, on what was otherwise expected to be a slow trading Friday, Jefferies clients turned out en masse, generating $5.5 million for Haiti.
The firm came up with another $1 million, and its employees chimed in with $1 million more. Within a week, Jefferies had wired $7.5 million to ten NGOs.
