Headquarters: New York, N.Y.

Hiring plans: McKinsey is ramping up its recruiting efforts this year, said company spokeswoman Yolande Daeninck.

The consulting firm recruits MBAs from all over the world, typically hiring recent graduates as associates, while bringing on MBAs with more on-the-job experience for other consulting roles.

The company looks for people with strong problem-solving skills who demonstrate leadership and determination.

Why new grads want to work there: McKinsey has produced more than 1,000 CEOs, 150 of whom went on to lead companies with more than $1 billion in annual revenue, said Daeninck.

"Many consultants join our firm because they want to build on their specialized skills and also broaden their opportunities," she said. "Others come to try something completely different, knowing that the experience they get will open doors for them even if they eventually decide to leave."
