McDonald's will always be known for its Big Mac and fries. But the fast-food behemoth has undertaken a massive campaign to broaden its appeal to latte-drinking, Food Network-watching (but budget-conscious) consumers.

The plan helped McDonald's thrive in the recession -- and its stock was one of the few success stories of the past decade.

But will this recipe help Mickey D's push further into fast-growing emerging markets, where it faces surprisingly strong competition?
