Legend has it that the two-seat, mid-engine Fiero was snuck past GM's elders under the pretense that it was a "commuter car." Engineered with off-the-shelf parts and plagued by engine fires, the Fiero got bad early reviews and never recovered. GM eventually corrected its faults but too late to save Fiero from the sharp-pencil calculations of the finance staff, who deemed it a money loser.
