Pet owners are happier and healthier than non-pet owners, according to a recent study published by the American Psychological Association. Plus, you won't find a more lovable deterrent to burglars.

"Thieves don't want anything to do with dogs," says Chris McGoey, an independent security consultant who specializes in crime prevention. "They'll just move on to the next house."

Pick up your pup for a $100 donation to a shelter, and spend the rest getting all the accoutrements that go with it. Here's the breakdown, according to the ASPCA:
