5 biggest state tuition hikes

Facing strained budgets, state colleges and universities have been hiking tuition at alarming rates. Here are five states where a public education costs a whole lot more than it did last year.

Average in-state tuition for 2011-12: $9,022
Total increase: 21%

To make up for budget cuts, California's largest public college system -- the 23-campus California State University -- raised total tuition and fees by an average of about 25% in 2011, according to data provided by Collegedata.com.

CSU San Marcos had the distinction of reporting the single highest percentage increase for any campus in the country -- a 31% to $6,596.
