Compact car: Volkswagen Jetta TDI
Price: $25,540
Fuel economy: 30 City / 42 HWY

Volkswagen can be faulted for a lot of things in the creation of the new, less expensive Jetta. The interior feels cheaper and the suspension's less sophisticated and sporty. And, once you get away from the base model, it's not so much cheaper, either.

One good thing they kept was the diesel engine option that turns out hybrid-like highway fuel economy while still being peppy and fun to drive. It brings the whole car up several notches.
