5 last-minute Memorial Day travel deals

It's not too late to book a trip for the upcoming holiday weekend. Even with short notice, there are lots of ways to save big on these top five destinations.

Sin City is the top spot for Memorial Day weekend travelers, based on bookings data compiled by both Priceline and Orbitz, and for good reason. Aside from the gambling, gourmet food and good weather, there are also great deals to be had this time of year.

Thanks to the sheer number of places to stay, room rates are generally a steal. And with fewer conventions happening this time of year, the average airfare to Las Vegas is also down 3%, according to Priceline. For an extreme eleventh-hour discount, Expedia spokesman Dave McNamee suggests booking on the Tuesday before Memorial Day when flight prices tend to hit their lowest point.

Money-saving tip: Online travel web sites typically run their summer sales in mid-May, which is just in time for travelers to take up to 35% off hotels on or off The Strip. That brings a stay at the four-star Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, for example, down to $149 a night, plus $100 in dining dollars, leaving you more cash for the slots.
