Many wireless carriers have nixed their unlimited data plans and are forcing big data users to pony up more money. Add in connected tablets and wearable devices and the monthly bills just keep getting bigger, said Zeus Kerravala, a principal analyst at ZK Research.

"Consumers will continue to use more and more data, so whatever they are paying now will (rise)," he said.

Verizon, which used to charge $30 a month for its unlimited data plan, now recommends that "heavy data users" pay $60 a month for its 3 GB data plan. Meanwhile, AT&T charges $70 a month for 6 GB of data.

Can't tear yourself away from your second screen? Then make sure to buy a plan that suits your data usage — otherwise you could be hit with steep overage charges.
