With 8,210 locations, the drugstore chain saw revenues rise to $72.2 billion in 2011, up from the previous year's $67.4 billion. Though the behemoth dominates much of the pharmaceutical market in the U.S., 2012 presents definite hurdles: Walgreen left the pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts' network on January 1. The company predicted the loss of as much as $3 billion in revenue this year – profits fell 8% in its second quarter – because Express Scripts customers will fill their prescriptions elsewhere. |
