(FORTUNE Magazine) – LOS ANGELES -- Long Beach City College will upgrade its women's sports program and pay $85,000 to settle a discrimination suit. The American Civil Liberties Union sued the college four years ago, alleging the school discriminated against its women student athletes . . . ''Today's settlement is much more than simply a victory for women athletes,'' said Ramona Ripston, ACLU executive director. ''It is one small step on the athletic field, one large step for womankind . . .'' Under the terms of the settlement, the college has agreed to hire a full- time women's athletic director . . . hire three new full-time women coaches . . . and give the women's locker-room attendant the same pay and job title as the men's. -- From a UPI dispatch.
