THROWING STONES AT WINDOWS

(FORTUNE Magazine) – It's easier to add peripherals to a Mac than to a Windows-equipped IBM-style PC, and Apple wants you to know it. This example comes from an Apple internal document entitled ''35 Macintosh Advantages.'' It compares the steps users must follow to hook a hard disk drive to a Mac with those for Quantum's Hardcard EZ, rated by reviewers as the easiest to add to a PC.

MACINTOSH 1. Plug (the disk drive) into the Macintosh.

2. Turn on the Macintosh.

PC WITH WINDOWS 1. Configure dip switches on the Hardcard if they conflict with another adapter in the computer.

2. Remove the computer cover.

3. Select an unused expansion slot, loosen the screw, and then remove the expansion slot cover.

4. Install the card. Then replace and tighten the screw that attaches the card's bracket to the computer chassis.

5. Close the computer case. Plug in your computer and peripheral devices.

6. Boot the computer.

7. Start a text editor programs -- such as EDLIN or any editor that can create ASCII or non-document files -- and modify DOS' CONFIG.SYS file to load the Hardcard device drive. To do this, add the following line to CONFIG.SYS: DEVICE--ATDOSHC.SYS. (Any other hard disk device drivers must be loaded before the Hardcard device driver.) Save the changes to the CONFIG.SYS file and exit the text editor.

8. If you are using DOS 4.01 and want to use partition sizes greater than 32 megabytes, be sure the DOS SHARE.EXE file is in the same directory as the COMMAND.COM file (usually the root directory).

9. Copy the device driver to the drive C root directory by inserting the Hardcard EZ Software Diskette into Drive A and typing: COPY A: ATDOSHC.SYS C:?

And 8 more steps to go.
