Where Companies Rank Within Their Industries
By

(FORTUNE Magazine) – To select the world's most admired companies, FORTUNE went straight to those in the know: senior executives and outside directors in each industry, plus financial analysts who earn their living comparing competitors in each field. As with FORTUNE's list of America's most admired corporations, we asked these industry insiders to rate each company on eight criteria: overall management quality, products or service quality, innovativeness, value as a long-term investment, financial strength, responsibility to the community and environment, and wise use of corporate assets. To reflect the list's international scope, we have added a ninth category, asking survey respondents to rate how effective each company is in doing business globally. A company's overall ranking is the average of the scores of all nine attributes. We have also added an all-star list, just like the one that accompanies our ranking of America's most admired companies (March 2; see the fortune.com archive). We asked those surveyed to select the five companies they most admire. The all-star list (see table in accompanying story) is composed of the 25 companies that won the most votes.

HOW WE SELECTED THE INDUSTRIES: Working with the Hay Group, a worldwide management consulting firm with headquarters in Philadelphia, FORTUNE divided its list of large global companies into 45 industries. We then winnowed the group down to 21 industries, eliminating those that were dominated by just one country or had fewer than four companies.
