And Perhaps a Furby to Go With Your Fuhrer?
By Mark Borden

(FORTUNE Magazine) – One man's synergy is another man's mirth. To boost its new auction business, Amazon.com has introduced a feature on its Website that suggests auction items whenever you search for a book, CD, or anything else Amazon sells. For example, if you search for Sun Tzu's The Art of War, Amazon might, as it did when we tested it, suggest a "combat infantry badge" for sale on its auction site--a plausible example of cross-marketing. But as of mid-April, this tie-in mechanism wasn't working quite the way its designers intended. That is, unless they really did mean to cross-market serious books with...adorable stuffed-animal toys? No doubt synergy will jell as the auction inventory grows--so hurry and have fun while you can! Here's what our book search turned up.
