(FORTUNE Magazine) – Esteemed tech investor Roger McNamee has some advice for your kids: Study Chinese.

That's just one suggestion from McNamee's The New Normal, a dizzyingly ambitious look at what it means to live and work at a time when technology and globalization are changing everything, everybody is connected all the time, and the future is uncertain.

McNamee offers the gung-ho perspective of the ultimate technologized capitalist: "Don't get a job. Create a job." Globalization? "Get used to it. Make the most of it." If such a lifestyle sounds demanding, he argues that in today's world there's little choice: If you don't adapt, somebody in India will. The bright side is that, largely due to the Internet and other tech tools, individuals have unprecedented power and influence. McNamee's observations are most compelling when he moves away from personal advice and talks about technology and investing. For instance, he believes that products matter more than P/E ratios when evaluating tech companies.

He also believes in keeping good company: McNamee, a part-time rock & roller, made headlines in June when U2's Bono joined his new firm, Elevation Partners. -- David Kirkpatrick
