Tips from Delta's makeover maven
By Eugenia Levenson, Fortune Magazine

(Fortune Magazine) -- Joanne Smith wants to make flying Delta (Charts) swank again. In 2003 she helped launch mod offspring Song, known for lime-green planes and Kate Spade - attired flight attendants. But the budget service floundered, and its operations were folded into the parent company in May.

Now Delta's VP of marketing, Smith is charged with revamping the customer experience (booking, check-in, and in-flight) and boosting the brand in time for the airline's planned exit from Chapter 11 next year. She shared a few travel tips from her home base in Atlanta.

Days on the road: 100.

Favorite airport: Boston. Delta just moved into Terminal A, and it's what an airport should be: huge lobby, tons of kiosks, and unique Boston restaurants.

Plane essentials: Panasonic noise-canceling headphones and my iPod.

Mile-high cocktail: Mojito. It's one of my favorites, and we're now serving it on Delta flights.

Cheap thrill: The Apple Pan in West L.A. has the best cheeseburgers and apple pie. It's an old-time diner with a friendly staff and fabulous food.

Local tip: South City Kitchen in midtown Atlanta serves Southern cuisine with a contemporary flair. They have the best fried chicken I've ever had.

Can't miss: The Promenade des Anglais in Nice. There's a flower market every morning with fresh flowers and herbs from Provence.

Next big thing: In-flight stress relievers. It could be aromatherapy, spa packs, or piping a spa scent throughout the cabin. It would sure beat the smell of the lavatory.  Top of page
